- (en) The source of rumours in L’eau des collines by Marcel Pagnol The article returns to the noises running wild around the existence of a spring in L’eau des collines (1963) by Marcel Pagnol ( 1895-1974). This work tends to enlighten Pagnol’s art, more serious as might seem when he depicts the hardships of the murderous village’s mentality that continues to plague the Bastides. Often set aside by the academic critique, the writer demonstrates sensitivity in Jean de Florette as well as Manon des sources, when it comes to organising the marriage between water-in the wake of L’eau et les rêves. Essai sur l’imagination de la matière de by Gaston Bachelard– and the tabou developping around it, trough the effects of a “morality of silence”. The article is divided into 5 parts. The first one, “Name, nickname, nominee”, evokes the writer’s trick when he cryptically announces the filiation associating victim and offender, through the mythical figure of ‘Papet’. Second, the article analyses “false Friends”, by relying on sociological mechanisms designed to allow a conspiracy disguised as friendschip, meant to bring the scapegoat, Jean de Florette, to ruin. The study then focuses on “l’authenticité de Jean de Florette”, by showing that his failure is also associated with a quixotic naivety. A fourth point, “Manon, la fille de l’eau”sets Manon at a strategic crossroad between rumours going round in the village that are not safely running of source. Last but not least , in “le témoignage” it comes to stepping outside the overall framework of old deadly stories of the village by legal means.
