The experiments reported in this paper review the long historical quest to understand how our muscles function. Most were performed on frog muscles. The energy balance of man has never been fully made up to now. It is fair to assume that the muscular power of man is obtained from a chemo-mechanical transduction operated by actomyosin that taps the energy stored in ATP. The usage of ATP and its resynthesis by the three recovery reactions have been ascertained in man. However, it has been impossible until now to measure exactly either the glycolytic power (i. e. the rate of production of lactic acid) or the instantaneous heat production in man. It is thus still possible that a fraction of the energy mobilized at peak muscular power originates from a yet unknown source.
