(en) Introduction: Pain management, recognized as a complex biopsychosocial challenge, necessitates comprehensive approaches beyond pharmacological treatments. Cognitive factors, such as attention, have been shown to influence pain perception by modulating neural responses and descending modulatory pathways. Hypnosis, increasingly used in pain management, remains poorly understood regarding its impact on spinal activity.
Methods: The project proposes to investigate this aspect using two markers of spinal activity: the N13 component of somatosensory event-related potentials (ERPs) and the RIII component of nociceptive withdrawal reflexes (NWR). Hypnotic analgesia (HA) and focused hypnotic analgesia (FHA) will be induced, with spinal activity monitored before, during, and after suggestion.
Results: We hypothesize that if HA can modulate spinal transmission, the amplitude of the N13 during HA should decrease compared to before and after. If FHA can selectively modulate spinal transmission, a decrease in the amplitude of the N13 and the RIII component should be observed when the stimulation occurs on the "protected" arm compared to the "unprotected" arm during the FHA, while no changes in the amplitudes should be observed before and after.
Discussion: The aim of this project is to evaluate whether hypnosis can globally and selectively modulate spinal activity induced by somatosensory stimuli, which would allow for a better understanding of the mechanisms of HA and lead to a more effective utilization.
