Abstract
An open border means connected people, easy crossings and some common views about the neighbour from the other side of the border. A qualitative survey based on pictures, sentences, open questions has been applied to a first group of graduate and undergraduate students in human and political sciences and in geography. These students live in the North of France or in the West of Belgium, that means closed to the franco-belgian border. the objective of this survey is to check how people represent the border. The answers have been unexpected both in terms of how to define a border, whether a border creates positive or negative impacts, what the franco-belgian crossborder cooperation creates.
