During the last thirty years, "grass roots" ecumenism has known important advances during the Assemblies of Basel, Seoul and Graz. On the other hand, what could be called "institutional" ecumenism has undergone several crises both in the dialogue between Rome and Orthodoxy (in particular the Uniate question and that of the patriarchate in the Ukraine) and in the dialogue between the WCC and Orthodoxy (the conditions of participation of the Orthodox Churches).
