Abstract
In late medieval France and the Burgundian Low Countries, the presence of soldiers from the royal or ducal armies in a city was often perceived as a potential source of troubles for the urban community, whether these soldiers were permanently garrisoned or temporarily housed. Housing problems, supply shortages, as well as the lack of military discipline frequently favored the rise of tensions between combatants and non-combatants, which could turn into open and violent confrontations. In this context, such conflicts were often preceded by the spreading of rumors and noises in the city, by which the inhabitants were informed of the disturbances caused by military presence, while the soldiers heard of the urban population’s opposition and resistance. Using a selection of cases from criminal and chancery records from fifteenth-century France and the Low Countries, this paper aims to examine the role of the circulation of information in the irruption of violence between soldiers and non-combatants in late medieval cities.
