Abstract
(en) Health-related quality of life QoL is an important aspect of assessing disease handicap and the impact of treatment, and a powerful tool to compare these concepts across quite different types of disease. This paper describes for the first time the effect of treatment on QoL in alcoholic subjects in a large multinational European study. Methods: All patients were treated with acamprosate and associated psychotherapy for six months. An open-label, uncontrolled design was chosen to reproduce as closely as possible standard conditions of care in Europe. Health-related quality of life was evaluated with the SF36 questionnaire, assessed at baseline, three months and six months. Results: The study evaluated 1250 patients, of whom 740 provided follow-up data after treatment. Multivariate Analysis of Variance showed quality of life to be dramatically reduced in the alcoholic patients compared to an healthy reference population.
