Abstract
This chapter highlights the research on climate activists’ communication on social media in France and Belgium. A large panel of approaches from Social and Communication Sciences is presented: they focus on the analysis of messages on climate change mitigation spread by youth activist groups on social media. We provide a theoretical reflection on online activism in general and online climate activism in particular by focusing on its organisation and goals. Moreover, this work contributes to the understanding of the European branch of the youth climate movement and their communication. We introduce the structure of the European youth climate movements and problems related to their online organisation. By focusing on the research on social media data, we synthesise different approaches to message-analysis. More precisely, we draw attention to the online communication on Instagram and TikTok by the Belgian and French Youth for Climate movements. Finally, we discuss future perspectives of the research in this field.
