- Abstract
- This thesis deals with the question of a child who has for a long time been labelled « difficult » or « emotionally disturbed ». As a rule, he experiences exclusion daily and the risk if moving towards delinquency, drug addiction, depression or suicide. Examining and solving the problems of this child does not, therefore, mean reacting to run-of-the-mill worries but rather responding to a real public health question. <BR> We have decided to call this child “dissocial” because we wish to denounce the tragedy involved: he is rejected by groups and therefore has difficulty adapting to the family, school and social environments. <BR> In the domain of mental health, such children are increasingly becoming a matter or interest to clinician experts. In international classifications the problem is called “oppositional defiant disorder”. However, the criteria used in these classifications are, in our view, insufficient because they do not reflect the complexity of interrelations which are linked to the persistence of the child’s problems and to the phenomenon of social exclusion from which he suffers. This research aims to report on : <BR> 1 – The view which a child psychiatrist in a medical-pedagogic institute has of the institution in which he is working as a psychotherapist with children suffering form relationship, behaviour and emotional difficulties. Chapter I summarises this view. <BR> 2 – A description of the dissocial child. This is done with the help of a systemic conceptual framework. Chapters II and III briefly present several theoretical and historical aspects of this approach, while Chapter IV explains the actual descriptive aspects of the child. <BR> 3 – The interactional exclusion mechanism, in which defiance plays a part, as a distinctive relationship pattern of the dissocial child. The origin and function of defiance are explained in Chapter V, while Chapter VI describes the strategy which this pattern pursues, <BR> 4 – A therapeutic strategy used but the child psychiatrist whose main objective is to help young dissocial person to rid himself of the role of perverse child. Chapter VII outlines the phases of this strategy
