Many different load balancing and load sharing policies are described in the scientific literature. It is often quite difficult to grasp the essential characteristics of the various schemes, and to get a clear view of their behaviour. It is even more difficult to compare the schemes with each other and to reason about their properties. The paper outlines a unified framework and a methodology for systematically describing dynamic load distribution schemes. The approach allows to compare and to analyze these schemes according to their behavioural characteristics. Moreover, a relationship is established between design choices within existing load distribution schemes and properties (concerns) which these schemes attempt to satisfy.
