- (en) This article offers a comparative analysis of the phenomenological interpretations of the question of subjectivity proposed by Martin Hediegger and Michel Henry. After bringing in sharper focus Heidegger’s theses and pointing at the central role the notion of ‘transcendence’ plays in their formulation, the paper focuses on Henry’s attempt to overcome the ‘one-sidedness’ that afflicts, in Heidegger’s view, the modern (Cartesian) interpretation of subjectivity as ‘consciousness’ apodicticity’ (and consequently as the ‘certainty of representation’) by retrieving the notion of self-affection. By trying to assess whether and to what extent Henry’s ‘material phenomenology’ succeeds in offering a conceptualization of subjectivity that does not have the ‘faults’ of metaphysical thought and onto-theology, the article opens to the question whether the phenomenology of life developed by Henry represents itself a ‘new’ first philosophy.
