Abstract
The hypothesis explored in this article is that initiating a SE can be seen as an act of resistance to the hostile effects of gender in the labor market in a context of globalization. It adds to the literature that seeks to understand the reasons for the over-representation of women in SE by reflecting on how SE initiators articulate the social mission of their organisation with women’s emancipation, be it as workers or users. From qualitative surveys carried out in SE delivering care or environmental services, the paper accounts for emancipation issues as formulated by SE initiators. In many respects SE initiators see their places as offering limited assets to grant financial autonomy or to resist unsatisfying working conditions for women, issues on which initiators have hardly any influence. If initiators show genuine concern about emancipation, it is merely connected with fuzzy contents, like "repairing" livelihoods or "resistance", without necessarily identifying against who this resistance is organized.
