The Role of Environmental Self-Identity and Organizational Affective Commitment in the Relationship between Organizational Support towards Environmental Citizenship Behaviors
Individuals’ social-psychological mechanisms have a significant impact on green workplace behaviors. Yet, the influence of environmental self-identity on environmental citizenship behaviors have not been studied so far. This study investigates the organizational and psychological mechanisms leading individuals in organizations to engage in environmental citizenship behaviors. Therefore, the influence of environmental self-identity on the relationship between POS-E and organizational affective commitment are examined. Results from a survey of 794 employees from different organizations suggest that the relationship is only strengthened by a high level of environmental self-identity. Whereas POS-E is positively related to OCBE, affective commitment is found to be negatively related to environmental citizenship behaviors. Theoretical and empirical implications of the findings are discussed.
