Abstract
(en) The dominant speech on migration and development considers that during migration, the migrants acquire not only an economic capital but also new knowledge, skills, aptitudes, competencies, experiences and values as well as a transnational social capital. In possession of these three types of capital, migrants and migrants who go back home become new actors of development, projects and economical undertaking. Starting from interdisciplinary study of Peruvian migrant workers in Italy and the analysis of the return of some of them, this thesis suggests the necessity to relativize the assertion of said dominant speech. Our result shows that, during the migration, the different dimensions of human capital develop as unequal and contradictory. It has been observed an absolute and relative loss of formal human capital. The experience of living abroad is generally positive. The accumulation of skills is only in some cases transferable. Once they return, the migrants are facing big reintegration difficulties as employees in the work force. This situation forces them to look for an option of self-employment this implies the investment of their savings in incoming generating activities. The modest financial capital, the lack of accumulation of human capital determines the creation of small businesses in the area of services. The approach of postcolonial studies used in this thesis suggests that subaltern situation of Peruvian migrants in Italy makes difficult the accumulation of financial, human, and social capital. Migrants who overcome this subaltern situation accumulate more capital.
