Abstract
This thesis explores the neuromechanics of running, i.e. the integration of biomechanics and motor control to understand gait adaptions when challenged. We investigated the adaptions of the centre of mass and related these to changes in the limb and muscular coordination patterns. We investigated modifications where no work was done against the environment, i.e. step frequency and running while turning. Then, we analysed modifications where work had to be done against the environment, i.e. against tractive forces or a wind force. When challenged, centre of mass mechanics and lower-limb coordination adapted accordingly. Notably, the direction in which an environmental force was applied to the body does not influence the amount of mechanical work done, leading to similar mechanical and limb coordination changes. By bridging biomechanics and motor control, this work provides a deeper understanding of how these levels function collectively as part of an integrated system.
