- (en) From a study carried out in the streets of Bujumbura, focused on Timbayi, the author contributes to the debate on studies focused on street children in general, showing that it is possible to see some hidden dimension of street life. The presence of Timbayi within the urban space of Bujumbura is a combination of circumstances showing the dawn of another form of life, which is free from torments and family violence or cruelty within military groups. However, their presence within this urban space was not pre-organised; there were no formal structures at their disposal from the outset. Mindful of and compelled by the force of survival, and despite the harassment they encounter daily, they still have the capacity of adaptation, of being independent and to cope with the challenges of life. They are also capable of reconstituting a new form of social interaction and community life. Not necessarily at odds with the global society, with different logics, they single out themselves as clever actors endowed with behaviour that can influence other social actors.
