- (en) For the modern reader, there are many angels in the New Testament, but what appears as a proliferation is nothing compared to their spread in texts from some Second Temple Judaism milieux. Indeed, their literary deployment had intensified somewhat before the turn of the Christian era, and the New Testament is in fact a stopgap. While the biblical texts gather the scriptural heritage and portray angels in their traditional functions, they also want to put a hold on the uncontrolled multiplication of angels in Second Temple Judaism. Are there purely theoretical reasons for this halt, or is it intended to counter an actual angelic cult? To speak in modern terms, is this concern theological or pastoral? Although it is difficult to answer this question due to a lack of sources, it should be noted that the presence of angels in New Testament texts makes it possible above all to affirm the superiority of Christ and to define his place within a well-understood monotheism.
