Abstract
This article analyses a "Descent from the cross" attributed to Ambrosius Benson, an Italian painter active in Bruges during the first half of the sixteenth century and trained in the workshop of Gerard David. As the composition of the painting derives from a model by David himself, I consider the artistically fruitful, but nonetheless conflicting, relationship between Benson and his former master. By combining stylistic, iconographic, historical and technical investigations, this article also retraces the circulation of the composition of David’s Descent from the cross (New York, The Frick Collection) from his workshop to Benson and other painters from David’s circle.
