- At the beginning of the 1970's, Great Britain witnessed a new wave of "transhumance"; groups of people and families "chose" voluntarily to escape from the constraints of the consumer society and the serious financial problems they faced by "adopting" an itinerant way of life. These itinerants were called New Travellers by the British media. They are currently around two thousand people living in chance dwellings (huts and cabins) or rearranged mobile homes (trucks, buses or caravans) and travelling around the land to music festivals, fairs and other events related to the counter-culture. Since the adoption of a wandering life style is in part a result of intolerable life circumstances, this phenomenon cannot be analyzed separately from the sociocultural context of the advanced capitalist societies. The reaction to exclusion takes on clear structures, distinct from the social reactions in other periods of capitalism: the individuals who take part in this movement come from the majority culture and participated in one way or another in the radical movements resulting directly from the counter-culture, in opposition to the ways of life of the advanced capitalist society. Indeed, it is possible to state that the travellers created an autonomous social group, different from the other forms of nomadism or social "exclusion" in our society. Nevertheless, like other social phenomena in the advanced capitalist society, the traveller phenomenon contains many internal contradictions: the travellers constantly reiterate the importance of community but, like the majority of the people living in our society, they remain strongly attached to individualistic ideals of life. This thesis is presented in the form of a socio-anthropological monograph, based on ethnographic data. The "life routine" of the new travellers caught our attention since it is only by applying a phenomenological approach to the life of these people, carrying out their day-to-day activities that it will be possible to understand the real role of nomadism in the context of the their life. The objective of this study is therefore to understand the way of life of these new nomads through a systematic description of their daily life on the road and to comprehend the importance of these practices and life routines in forming their culture.
