- (en) Local Productive Systems are forms of industrial concentration in a territory where different actors (firms, institutions and community) interacts establishing relations of cooperation and competition and generating externalities. Local Productive Systems contribute to explain economic growth in some regions. Considering their origin, sector of activity and localization they are named industrial districts, clusters and local systems of innovation. This study is inscribed in industrial development centred in subnational integrated spaces in world economy. Two related objectives are pursued. Identify the conditions that permitted the origin and evolution of two Local Productive Systems in different contexts and industries: the tiles industry in the province of Castellón in Spain, and salmon farming in the region of Los Lagos in Chile. The importance of Local Productive Systems is underlined in the socio-economic dynamics in the local scale and the positions achieved in international trade. The study also looks into the role of inter-firms cooperation in the development of Local Productive Systems and maintains that under specific conditions, cooperation among firms can constitute a vector for success in these models of industrial organization. This study offers clues about the contribution of Local Productive Systems to the development of the regions where they are located. The conditions of vulnerability and reproduction of these models is analyzed in a scenario of sustainable development, underlining the importance of cooperation in its achievement. Our research indicates that in a context of increasing world competition, the cooperation in Local Productive Systems influences the creation of value through the generation of specific assets to the territory, in the socialization of risks, in the reduction of transaction costs and uncertainty and facilitating innovation processes. Cooperation becomes an articulating mechanism, a regulator and coordinator of the relations among the actors of these industrial spaces.
