Friction stir welding is increasingly used in various areas such as railways or aeronautics. This kind of assembly is used among others in specific aeronautical applications, where the strenght to weight ratio is critical. This paper presents a practical application involving dissimilar welds between a 6xxx and a high strength 2xxx aluminum alloy. It describes the development of the welding procedure including the design of a clamping device adapted to the complex geometry of those welds on large cylindrical parts and the non destructive testing method selected to control the welded parts.
