Abstract
Our research tackled the questtion of the mourning rituals in post-genocide Rwanda, higlighting their contributions to the psychic and mental reconstruction of their participants as well as their limits. We suggested the setting up of a group therapy with widows who survived the genocide. Their testimonies, illustrations, and accounts during the group therapy helped us to breach these themes. We additionaly conducted semi-structured interviews with some widows. Moreover,we took part in several memorial ceremonies and burial rituals. The victims died in the most terrible suffering,« wrongly died »,and the proper mourning rituals were not adequately followed. The post-genocide community tried then to cope and move on through various means such as the creation of a new mourning and memorial ritual implying for instance the exhumation and reburial of victims. We questioned the usefulness and relevance of those new mourning rituals at the individual, family, and community level. In which way are the post-genocide mourning ritual new and creative? How can those post-genocide mourning rituals help the psychic reconstruction of the survivors?
