Abstract
TO THE EDITOR, Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) is a major cause of permanent hearing loss and neurological impairment in children. If vertical transmission rate increases with gestational age at maternal CMV primary infection, the risk of severe fetal impairment is greatest when maternal infection occurs periconceptionally or during the first trimester of pregnancy. Valganciclovir therapy is recommended to treat congenitally infected neonates with significant CMV-related symptoms at birth. [...]
