Abstract
This thesis focuses on the construction of the collective meaning of the word ‘populism’ through its circulation within and between arenas of public discussion. Instead of seeking to propose a definition of what or who is populist, the research adopts a constructivist approach, focusing on how meanings are collectively constructed by social actors. Specifically, the study focuses on the spatiality in which the meaning of ‘populism’ is constructed. That is, it emphasizes how the places in which discourse circulates contribute to shaping the meaning of the word. In this sense, the research interrogates how arenas of public discussion relate to the replication and transposition of messages. A comparative approach is applied to explore national and transnational flows of communication, modes of circulation, and the influence of structural and agency-driven factors on meaning-construction processes. Anchored in the interdisciplinary framework of the TrUMPo project -an ARC project of UCLouvain- this thesis focuses on two case studies: Spain and France. In each of them, an analysis is conducted of the occurrences containing the word ‘populism’ produced in 2019 in parliamentary debates, mass media articles, and social media discourse.
