- Abstract
- This research focuses on the subjectivities of young activists who act from self-management and who inhabit the peripheries of Mexico City. Focusing on the period 2016-2022, the years following broad social movements with a strong youth presence, it presents the meanings of these young people in context of job insecurity and state repression. It argues that these activists resist these phenomena in their everyday lives, constructing themselves as political subjects, who, acting at a distance from the institutional margins, undertake lifestyles and economic-political projects that lessen their material needs and enable them to work for the immediate social change they advocate. They also maintain a solidarity network of care by relating to other political subjects and some social struggles, and they act discreetly by keeping a low profile, thus avoiding the possibility of suffering repressive acts. These meanings and actions of the activists allow us to understand the impacts of the neoliberal model on their lives, and expose some of the tensions that cross them, the limits of their actions and the concrete possibilities of improving their lives and transforming society.
