Abstract
This essay examines the motives, methods and means of the circulation of engineering knowledge in the Habsburg Netherlands in the 16th and 17th centuries. After elucidating the multiple meaning of the term "engineer" in that period, it assesses the circulation of the engineers themselves, the circumstances of knowledge transfers between them, and the various uses of drawings, models, treatises and manuscripts. These issues are further clarified by apposite comparisons with the situation in the 18th century.
