Abstract
(en) For several years, the case law developed by the Court of Justice of the European Union on the basis of instruments related to freedom of movement has required the 'recognition' of family ties validly es-tablished abroad, but unknown in the State of reunification. The V.M.A. judgment follows on from this case law, this time concerning the recognition of the parent-child relationship between a child and his/her same-sex parents. The Member States are now obliged to recognise, solely for the purposes of exercising freedom of movement and residence, the same-sex parent-child relationship validly estab-lished in another Member State. According to the Court, such an obligation of 'partial' recognition does not affect the national identity of the Member States.
