- Epistle 52 (‘On the Quiddity of Magic, Incantations, and the Evil Eye’) is conventionally listed as the fifty-second and ultimate risāla of those making up the encyclopaedic corpus of the Brethren of Purity. The text as is preserved in manuscripts is known in (at least) two different versions appearing to be mutually exclusive and which for this reason have been identified as ‘the short version’ (Epistle 52a) and ‘the long version’ (Epistle 52b) in the current project of critically editing and translating the entire corpus of the Rasā’il. In the first part of this paper, Godefroid de Callataÿ will deal with the current state-of-the-art concerning these two versions, their respective contents, and the question of authorship that each one raises.
