- Abstract
- This starts from a thorough discussion of the political theory of Mouffe and Laclau and offers an exploration of the theme of antagonism. It naturally fits into a perspective of >normative< philosophy and represents an attempt to reduce, or even abolish, the distance between political practice and political theory; it does so by explicitly asking what the concrete conditions are under which the Rawlsian theory of justice could be applied. The upshot of the paper is that while Mouffe and Laclau=s political ontology is flawed because it takes antagonism to be the very fabric of political life, the Rawlsian theory is too idealistic and omits to address a crucial issue: the issue of (perceived) material scarcity in social life, and the myriad problems connected to what the author calls >economic existentialism.
