Abstract
Since the early seventies, there has been, in various parts of the advanced capitalist world, a remarkable revival of interest in Marxist economics, and particularly in Marxist crisis theory. This has not only meant a renewed success for the ritual recitation of a handful of excerpts from 19th century books, rough drafts and letters. It has also induced an increasingly sophisticated critical examination and reformulation of the very core of Marxist economics. One of the most notable outcomes of this effort is the (final?) rejection of what many took to be the central element in Marxist crisis analysis : the so-called theory of the falling rate of profit.
