- Despite the complex terminological panorama of discourse markers and the elusiveness of the notion of discourse topic, the relation between these two linguistic phenomena is a longstanding one. Descriptions linking both are present even in early work on DMs and are still today subject of ongoing discussion. This paper presents the results of a mixed-method study on three DM configurations in Spanish: turn initial “y”, perceived lengthened of “y” and “bueno y”, which –based on a previous corpus work conducted on PRESEEA– seem to serve roles in the management of topicality in interaction. Via a behavioral task of real gathered data, we explore the contribution of these DMs to topic disambiguation, in an aim to provide insight into the debate of DMs as reliable cues for signaling topic shift. Results show speakers are able to disambiguate utterances independently of the discourse marker that introduces them, relying in the context (<0.001) and not on the DM.
