Abstract Nowadays organizations realize that employees do not only learn by taking training. Much learning takes place within the daily workplace, informally, in a social context, by exchanging feedback. Therefore the main objective of this study was to identify and characterize the flow of feedback exchange in a network of firemen in order to characterize their social network structure and the exchange of feedback within their network. A complete network of 21 firemen was analyzed using a questionnaire consisting of questions on feedback seeking, feedback-giving and the characteristics of their social network. Data were analyzed using the R software. It was found that the feedback exchange is determined by the organisational hierarchy, but interestingly also exceptions were discovered. To our knowledge, this is one of the first studies that researches feedback seeking as well as feedback-giving, based on a social network analysis in an emergency context, in order to unravel the characteristics of the informal learning that takes place in the network of colleagues.
