- In this presentation, I would like to expose how an art theoretician can appropriate scholastic concepts to add value to the mental creative process of the artist. I will study the chapter Federico Zuccari dedicates to the angel in his treatise Idea dei pittori, scultori e architetti (1607). Zuccari presents the angel’s mode of knowledge using the thomist philosophy as it was used by Jesuits such as de Toledo, Gonzaga and Bellarmino. However, he distances himself from these authors by giving angels the ability to create mental images. This ability is necessary for humans because of their sensible nature, and is possible thanks to their imaginative faculty, while spiritual creatures normally do not need it. I would like to reveal how Zuccari uses and adjusts this key-concept of the theories of art and knowledge in order to establish a parallel between man, the angels and God’s cognitive and creative capacities.
