Abstract
Thirty-two patients, suffering from chronic and severe anxiety disorders combined with other severe psychiatric disturbances, received 3 x 5 to 10 mg o.d. buspirone. Well-trained in psychotherapeutic approach, psychiatrists tested that drug as alternative to benzodiazepine adjunct treatment. Buspirone appeared to be highly effective for ten patients (31 %) and while the effect was temporary for six cases (19 %) ; minor side-effects were reported (three cases, 9,5 %). By a psychopathological point of view, buspirone-responders were mainly patients aiming to subjective control of their anxiety, in particular through obsessive - compulsive defences.
