- In my paper, I analyze greenhouse tomato production in a peasant community of the Peruvian Andes. I have been doing fieldwork in this peasant community since 2005. I followed the production development from its beginnings until it became a major production. Development agency copied this “successful initiative” to apply it in other communities. In the process, they changed it into a “model”, but this model only includes some of the many elements and actors necessary to understand the development of the production in the communities. To understand the production and its success, we need to study the agency of all actors: the plants, the soil, the insects, the greenhouse structures, the NGO’s, the government, and their entanglements. We also need to study the migration network that connects peasants in the communities to members of their families in Ecuador and the peasant political structure that articulates the families to the association of producers. Only a wider view of who are the actors can explain the success in the first peasant community and the systematic failure of the application of the model in other communities.
