Abstract
Starting from the shortest and probably earliest version of the story as told in the Harivaṃśa (HV 23.57-68), compared with the epic (esp. MBh 13,31) and Vedic accounts about Divodāsa and Pratardana characters, the paper examines the problem of its relationships with, on the one hand, the longer version given by both HV Appendix I no. 7 (ll. 56-156) and the Vāyu-/Brahmāṇḍa-purāṇas (VāP 92.23-68/BḍP 2,3,67.25-72), which presents a Śaiva episode dropped out by the corresponding text of the BrahmaP, and, on the other hand, a new version from the later Jaiminīyasaṃhitā of the Brahmāṇḍapurāṇa (adh. 2 sq.), which, despite its literary embellishment, could nevertheless be closer to what might have been the traditional version of the story. The focus on this episode gives the opportunity to discuss on a more general level the question of the relationships between the HV and the earliest purāṇas (VāBḍP, MkP, ViP, KūP, MtP, BhP, BrP + SkP) as regard to their PPañc common portions, as well as to raise or solve details in allusions made by Aśvaghoṣa (Buddh. 20.117) and Kālidāsa (Ragh. 2.35).
