Abstract
Two artificial coniferous stands, one of Douglas fir and one of Norway spruce, were thinned when the stands were respectively 9 and 19 years old. The present study was carried out during the spring and autumn of 1994, 5 years after the thinning of the spruce site and 8 after thinning of the Douglas fir site. The study determines the influence of various intensities of thinning on the earthworm populations. There was a preponderance of epigaeous species (Dendrobaena octaedra and D. attemsi). Response to the thinning was marked: the number of earthworms doubled in the stands which were moderately or intensively thinned. It would seem, therefore, that under thinned stands the amount of litter consumed by earthworms is greater, suggesting a more favourable organic matter cycle.
