This work advances the idea that the specificity of Fichte’s philosophical enterprise lies in the exploration of the very notion of philosophy whose outlines are revealed in Fichte’s original act of replacing the name φιλοσοφία by the name Wissenschaftslehre. This replacement is the result of a reflection on the conditions of possibility not only of scientific knowledge, but of philosophical knowledge as such, which would not be understood as a relation subject-object, but rather as self-reflective activity aiming at producing a systematic vision of the whole. Such a conception poses a challenge to the philosophical language to the extent that it could not be conceived as a tool to represent objects, but rather as the medium required for self-awareness, whose advent depends on the experience of conceptual production, thanks to which one can undertake a procedure of deconstruction and reconstruction of the self. The implementation of such a production depends on its turn on a path of apprenticeship within which some empowerment apparatus play a central role, notably language, a vision of the future, and a community of collective practice of knowledge. Philosophy, understood as Wissenschaftslehre, constitutes itself thus in the crossroads of those three activities: (i) knowing, in a large sense which is irreducible to the knowledge of particular objects, (ii) producing concepts, thanks to which this knowledge can manifest itself in a communicable shape, and (iii) schooling, which renders possible the conceptual production.
