Both chronic and ‘binge’ alcohol consumption will provoke an immune response in the systemic circulation (Hanak et al., 2017, Lallemand et al., 2013) (by the production of circulatory cytokines and other neuroimmune mediator) as well as in the brain, by altering the immune functions of microglia.
