The contribution highlights several of the challenges that are brought forward by such articulation between “human rights” and “the environment” in the current European context. The contribution is only exploratory and mostly reflects discussions that were hold with students during the 2024 Pollen program at UCLouvain Saint-Louis Brussels. They wanted to understand if attributing individuals a right to a healthy environment meant that we had to choose between « rights » and « duties » and if it would not be more fruitful to keep it to duties; they wondered if a human right was appropriate as it might be too individual, or too anthropocentric; they had also heard about rights for nature and wanted to understand if these could create risks for humans.
