- Abstract
- What are the developments in research on the links between family and religious transmission over the past sixty years? This question highlights the central theme of our doctoral study. This choice arises from the observation of the important role attributed to the family, which is increasingly seen as a key player in religious education, with parents considered as "the first catechists of their children." Between 1960 and 2020, perspectives have shifted, and interest in families has continuously increased. There is a major pastoral challenge for the Western Church in assessing the motivations, stages, and impacts of parental involvement in religious transmission, and in suggesting a religious awakening through, with, and among families. The thesis is divided into four parts and opens with an analysis of the issue from the perspective of the social sciences, in order to correlate social evolution and family reality. The question of family transformations, individualization, and the influence of habitus are necessary prerequisites for addressing the topic. Next, a historical overview is provided on the family-religious transmission binomial within Western Christianity. Additionally, the thesis includes a theological analysis of sixty years of discourse on the family as the domestic church, a community of faith, and a missionary community. Finally, despite the resistance to initiatives in favor of families, we affirm that children have the right to religious education. In this regard, the study suggests a project for a local church: to propose and support an evangelizing catechesis for families. This project is structured in three parts: proposing and supporting awakening catechesis; proposing and supporting meditative reading of the Word of God, fostering dialogical catechesis; and proposing and supporting the organization of family networks and small ecclesial communities: ecclesiolae. By highlighting the figure of the catechist as a supporter of families and a leader of communities, the thesis contributes to research in practical theology on a broader question: family pastoral care.
