- (en) The thesis focuses on two aspects of international trade that have attracted much interest in recent years: liberalization of international trade in services on the one hand and international migration on the other. Given the recent increase in the importance of trade in services, it has become necessary to evaluate how restrictions to trade in service impact on performance indicators. The first two chapters contribute to the literature by assessing the effects of trade liberalization in international maritime services and communications services on performance indicators specific to these sectors. The last two chapters examine the country specific variation in the performance of skilled male immigrants on the US labor market. One approach consists of evaluating the entry level occupational placement of immigrants as of Census 2000. The other adds a dynamic dimension to the analysis, by focusing on three consecutive Censuses - 1970, 1980 and 1990 - to investigate convergence in the performance of US immigrants from different countries of origin.
