An objective measure of French-speaking adolescents' prosocial moral reasoning.

- In recent years, there has been a considerable interest in the prosocial and moral cognition due to the role of it in positive social behaviour. Despite this interest and the recent studies on prosocial moral reasoning, the available data concerning French-speaking adolescents are very limited. This is partly due to the lack of a validated French-version of standardised instruments to rate the prosocial moral reasoning. The present study aims at elaborating an objective measure of prosocial moral reasoning for French-speaking adolescents, the Raisonnement Moral Prosocial (RMPro) scale that contains seven dilemmas. 158 adolescents aged from 12 to 17 participated in this study. Furthermore, 29 adolescents who are siblings of a mentally handicapped child were strictly matched with 29 adolescents of the broad ranging sample. The results show age-related differences for needs-oriented reasoning, and gender-related differences for needs-oriented, approval-oriented and interiorized reasoning. The adolescents who are siblings of a mentally handicapped child also differ from the others for hedonistic-oriented, stereotypic-oriented and needs-oriented reasoning. Finally, the RMPro scale is not correlated with social desirability while the inter-item consistency is high and the correlations between the five subscales are low or negative.
