The configuration of new circular business models (CBMs) is essential to enable a shift towards a circular economy (CE). A number of existing CE and CBM studies still lack a focus on analyzing CBMs across various industries and companies’ positions in value chains. This paper classifies companies by industries and company’s types which are defined by company’s positions in value chains. We aim to reveal common and different CBMs across different industries; the relationship between CBMs, industries, and companies’ types ; and how a company’s type influences the access to and utilization of functionality of materials and products. To achieve the aims, sustainability reports of companies with high Environmental, Social, and Governance scores will be analysed using a text mining technique. Exploratory data analysis will be used to identify patterns of CBMs within and across industries and company’s types, as well as their influence on accessing and utilizing materials and product functionalities. We expect to reveal diverse CBM strategies across various industries and companies’ types, beyond the most commonly described CBM in literature, such as product-as-a-service systems and recycling. We also expect to identify key actors and propose possible synergizing CBM strategies within and across industries through analyzing different types of companies. The contribution of this paper is to help future research and practitioners realize how various CBMs and companies’ types in value chains of different industries influence the access to and utilization of materials and product functionality and what are possible CBM synergies to enhance CE.
