Abstract
This paper presents a 10-year systematic literature review regarding the determinants for organizational innovation, updating a similar review completed by Crossan and Apaydin (2010). Reviewing articles from 2007 to 2016, we propose a synthesis of the literature along two frameworks. The first framework is an extension of Crossan and Apaydin’s paper, identifying the various theories used to discuss organizational innovation by level of analysis and adding “network” as an extra level of analysis. The second framework categorizes the determinants of organizational innovation across on one hand the levels of analysis and on the other hand managerial and leadership levers, using a typology derived from Adams et al. (2006). Our review shows the dominance of transformational leadership and the importance of ecosystems as the two major evolutions in the organizational innovation literature. We further discuss limitations, suggest avenues for future research and present implications for research and practice.
