- (en) How Can Ancient Weight Standards Be Accurately Reconstructed? Th is paper analyses the methods used to reconstruct ancient weight standards based on literary, epigraphic and archaeological sources. We first explore the challenge of constructing consistent data series based on disparate ancient sources. We then highlight the contrast between etic and emic approaches for representing metrological systems. e example of Athenian commercial mina shows that ancient metrological systems were evolving social constructs, characterized by specific uses, variable accuracy, and successive reforms. is makes it impossible to reconstruct a single, absolute standard.
