Abstract
For the design and production of bone scaffolds having a porous architecture with controllable properties, a novel methodology was proposed, based on implicit surfaces, providing a computer-aided design (CAD) framework that was cost-effective, numerically exact, and compatible with image-based methods. The framework integrated methods for the accurate determination of geometrical and mechanical parameters by applying appropriate boundary conditions and homogenization theory. To validate the methodology, predicted properties were compared to experimental results for regular Ti6Al4V bone scaffolds, produced by Selective Laser Melting (SLM). For the geometrical parameters, a good agreement was obtained, considering the relatively large scaffold roughness due to a limited manufacturing resolution. The roughness caused the model to significantly overestimate the effective stiffness, implying that variability due to rapid prototyping should accounted for to improve predictions.
