Abstract
(en) The different approaches and definitions of domestic violence are subject to intense debates in the theoretical field but also regarding policies, practices and interventions. But what kind of violences are we talking about? To attempt to answer this question, this paper proposes to put two paradigms under discussion: the symmetry of violence and the domination. The results of this research are based on empirical data collected in a Belgian shelter for battered women. This paper defends the thesis according to which domestic violence is an example of patriarchal domination still present in society. Through this perspective, the author questions the concepts of power, stereotype and emancipation and examines finally penal justice’s perceptions on women victims of domestic violence.
