- Abstract
- (en) Study and edition of an unpublished latin encyclopaedia of the Late Middle Ages called Viridarium. The work is written by the jurist John Raynaud (Iohannes Raynaudus) from Avignon and exist only in one manuscript (Dublin, Chester Beatty Library, WMs 80), the autograph of the author. The thesis contains valuable information about this rather lesser-known author, his other writings, libraries in the Provence at that time and the historical context. Emphasis is put on the various text-sources used by John Raynaud, especially a revised version of the Liber de natura rerum (13th century) by Thomas of Cantimpré, but also the Otia imperialia of Gervase of Tilbury and the Ruralia commoda of Petrus de Crescentiis. The illustration (225 drawings) of the manuscript is also commented on in the thesis.
