- Traditional and online student networks, together with online education tools, have been studied for several years, and are now highly recognized for the description and prediction of education outcomes, particularly performance and achievement. Furthermore, researchers have used diverse quantitative and qualitative techniques to study the relationships between the social networks surrounding students, and success in school or in college. Despite this, and to the best of our knowledge, no literature review exists, addressing student networks and their links with achievement. The principal contribution of this paper is the synthesis of principal results gathered since 2000 and that are related to the impacts of student networks on academic-related outcomes, i.e., performance. A review of the principal analysis methods used to address these issues constitutes the second purpose of this paper. This literature review will lead to the discussion of research questions that remain to be covered in the domain of student networks in relation with academic achievement. Some methodological challenges that occur when studying the impact of peers or networks on education outcomes will also be addressed.
